Software: Having issues with EigenD and OSX El Capitan Beta

Most Recent

written by: TheTechnobear

so, to get this straight, your using the default pico setup, and the piano works.
if so this, is good news, as it means the runtime, eigend and samples are all installed correctly :)

it sounds like your saying you cannot find any audio units, correct?

try to do a plugin scan...
start eigend
tools/plugin scanner
and click on 'full scan'

do you get any errors?
are you plugins listed as 'good plugins'

note: there will no doubt be failed plugins, this is because currently eigend does not support 64 bit plugins, so any 64 bits plugs will be 'failed'

now restart eigend

you will need to start the Tools/EigenBrowser.
- then select the VST instrument on the pico , then select browse
the pico reference guide details which buttons to press to do this, I cant remember off-hand.
the alternative is (still need eigenbrowser running) is to launch Stage, and then go to the VST tab, and select browse there.

you should get a list of both VSTs and Audio units that you have installed.
(assuming you have installed some VSTS/AU! :))

now, there is currently a bit of a gitch in the EigenBrowser UI, so when you select thing, you might have to move the window for it to update.
(Ive got a fix for this, but not got around to building/releasing it yet)

another option, and I think one many of use use, is not to use EigenBrowser, but instead use Workbench.
(this is more advanced!)

to do this, run eigenD , load the default setup and then start workbench.
then look for the audio unit rig 1 (its on the right hand side), click on open
which shows you how a audio unit rig is built.
now... you will find an 'instrument audio unit' component
right click to select the edit tool, then click on the audio unit component
now you will find a parameter call plugin... with browse next to it.
this brings a tree of all available plugins... select the one you want.

I know workbench, seem intimidating at first ... think of its as a modular synth with modules wired up.
BUT in the long run its worth getting to know it, its actually pretty easy to use, and allows for alot of customisation and tweaking.
(and the UI is much more modern than the old EigenBrowser and EigenCommander ones)

tip: when you have selected the VSTs you want to use, you can save the setup, as a user setup.

hope the above helps, if you get stuck let us know, and we can clear up any confusion.

Hello,

Have just installed the El Capitan Beta in my Mac and as a result I cannot use EigenD software (or Stage) anymore. I get a message saying the software may be damaged or incomplete. I have tried to reinstall it also and didn't work....
I have raised the issue with Apple and will let you know if they respond.
In the meantime, if you have any ideas please share as I am deeply concerned. Thanks!

Which release of the EigenD have you tried? It might be worth trying the community release that TheTechnobear is managing. See this post for details:

Unfortunately the community release did not work either. The system asked me to install the Support Package first, and the Support package crashed...

Post the crashlog; hopefully its something obvious (I don't have a system that I can test a fix on).

Id say its likely to be a 'beta issue' probably to do with the upgrading process, which tends to get ironed out later.

try running from the command line (terminal)
e.g.
/Applications/Eigenlabs/2.1.1-community/EigenD.app/Contents/MacOS/EigenD

the community release, uses exactly the same support package... you do not have to reinstall it.
(Id guess its more like the installers are currently having an issue, probably package management changes)

I also don't have a machine with El Capitan on it, nor one that I can 'risk' upgrading at the moment (due to other things I need running)

that previous one was for the EigenD Support. When I try to install 2.1.1 the installation stops (log below) and I get a message saying the software cannot be installed in my hard disk, and that I should install EigenD support package before. Anyway... will see what happens with the final release... thanks.

Does /usr/pi exist and can you write to it?

written by: TheTechnobear

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 12:34:31 +0100 BST

yeah, looks like /usr/pi is not there....
(it would usually create it I think, but possibly an issue creating it, so perhaps we can make it easier for it :))

/usr/pi
=====
need to see if it exists,if /usr/pi does exist then it may be its permissions have been altered... if so then I suggest 'moving it out of the way' (for now) with

sudo mv /usr/pi /usr/pi.old

the create it, with open permissions
sudo mkdir -p /usr/pi

sudo chown 777 /usr/pi

(later is not necessary, but just in case root permission is not being granted successfully)

System Preferences
================
(this 'concerns' me : Package Authoring Warning: Package will fail to install with System Integrity Protection feature enabled )

Finally (before running install again) ,
in System Preferences, check the General tab, and selection Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere. (it will be greyed out, you need to unlock in the bottom left)

Note: this MAY have changed in El Capitan.... so I would check system preferences for similar 'restrictions'. (
its quite possible Apple are becoming more 'restrictive' as this has been their trend in past releases)

and of course, try the latest El Capitan release, as they keep updating it.. think now beta 3 or 4?

after all this try installing support package. and then community release.

and let us know how you get on :)

Thanks for your help! Unfortunately I haven't been able to create usr/pi … not even logging as root. Maybe that is the issue?

written by: TheTechnobear

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 20:58:13 +0100 BST

ok, appears I was correct :)

TheTechnobear said:

System Integrity Protection (SIP) is a new feature, which stops even root users from changing certain files/directories.
Unfortunately, it looks like currently there is no way of lifting the restriction, except by disabling SIP entirely.

see SIP changes

ok, now Ive a problem, EigenD can quite easily run outside of /usr/pi, so we could alter this BUT I don't have anyway of updating the support package (its not open sourcE) to move this into an acceptable location.

So, really Eigenlabs are going to have to resolve this, I will email them, as it sounds like it will be needed before long.

Argh, that's tedious. I suppose a move to /usr/local/pi would make sense.

written by: TheTechnobear

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 09:54:10 +0100 BST

yeah, @dggontan can you check to see /usr/local is writeable by root
e.g.
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/pi

personally, I think id prefer it was moved to : /Library/Application Support

anyway, Geert has said he will try to take a look (he has access to the support package)

First, I'm sorry for my absence and silence, too many things going on :-/

I've started looking into this problem and was able to rebuild a working runtime package that still installs in /usr/pi. I preferred trying to mimic the existing installation first to be able to validate if the libraries work since I can't get the same very old version of Python to compile on the oldest MacOSX that I have. Installation into "/Library/Application Support" has been problematic before due to Python having problems with spaces in paths, so /usr/local/pi seems like the best shot.

I'm also taking the opportunity to see if I can rebuild this with a more recent version of other support packages (wxPython), using Cocoa instead of Corban, in the hope that the focus handling problems of the EigenBrowser and EigenCommander could be solved by that.

I'll keep you posted of my progress.

@GoneCaving still your testing will be very welcome since there might be some regressions due to a different Python version, even on other OS X versions
