General Discussion: Navigating the WIKI

Mike - Agreed, although that's not really what I'm suggesting - I was thinking more to simplify the FAQ sections for new users, for example http://www.eigenlabs.com/wiki/Eigenlabs_Retail_and_Shipping/.

'not a burning issue, of course, but at some future point I wonder if there could be some navigation aid with more detail than just the headings but less than the index?

So, something like a tree structure of headings that could be expanded (or not) below the main headings?

I guess I'm asking for an outline view

I like that idea.

I was also thinking, specifically for the FAQs, that it becomes a bit tedious to read through some of the really useful entries because you have to go to another page, then back again, repeatedly.

Also, I think a lot of info would be much better presented as expanding/collapsing sections - at the moment there's a lot of back & forthing between seperate pages.

An example here: Windows 7 FAQ (and please at least have a look before you scoff in disgust at the mere mention of the word 'Windows') ;)

So, I looked. Now can I scoff? Just kidding.

The only thing about collapsing sections is that they can be harder to either print and/or import into a single document. Hmmm... perhaps this is just me not knowing how?

Perhaps a navigation bar at the top of each section??

Mike,

Actually I think it's the opposite - with the expanding/collapsing sections, all the info is actually in the same webpage. It's pretty easy via a stylesheet to make it so that when you print, all the sections print expanded.

At the moment you'd have to print each document separately, or copy/paste them into a document of your own, or something.

Just for info, here's another site which uses the nice expando FAQ style: http://www.postcrossing.com/help

That *is* quite nice but it is also a *lot* smaller than the encyclopedic work growing here. It is also only one level deep and one of the issues here is deeper navigation.

Just for fun, go there and click 'expand all' then imagine doing that here!
