Pico: Full chromatic scale - similar to 2 strings?

Ah thanks. I'll dive into the wiki soon. One thing I noticed was that in the descriptions, I forgot to change the word major to minor when I copied and pasted.... I'll change the ones in this thread above/

Hi everyone.

Firstly, thank you Eigenlabs!!! I am absolutely blown away with the Pico. It is so sensitive, and dynamic... and thanks to you, I am no longer musically disabled :)

I am having issues with the standard Pico fingering - namely that due to disability, my left hand is quite weak and I cannot hit the buttons hard enough to trigger the piano sound properly.... So I've been adapting to using just the right hand for those types of sounds - and the standard Pico fingering just doesn't seem natural for me.

I am wondering if there is any way to set up the Pico so that the two rows mimic a standard stringed instrument - going up chromatically with each 'fret' - with a choice of setting the strings to be in 5ths (like a violin) or 4ths? And preferably being able to use the two scroll buttons as well? I'd like the octave jump buttons to go up and down in 5ths rather than octaves.

Is this possible? Am I making sense?

Many thanks!

Hi Stuart!

Welcome to the forum ~ nice to see you here too :) Been great to chat with you via YouTube/FB and glad you've finally got your Pico and are working away with it ... looking forward to seeing what the answer is to your query when the excellent support guys get a free minute (and they really are very good, so you're in great hands).

You can't currently use the two scroll keys as playing keys (hopefully that's coming soon), but you CAN define the notes of the other keys to anything at all using user define scales. See this thread for examples:

Hi stuwyatt,

Thanks for your post. I hope these two custom scales are the sort of thing you were looking for. Copy and paste these into you User Scales.txt file -

[Custom Scale for stuwyatt - Fifths]
;This scale is tuned to the chromatic scale, but with two courses tuned a fifth apart.
intervals=7 6 5 4 14 13 12 11 3 2 1 0 10 9 8 7 14

[Custom Scale for stuwyatt - Fourths]
;This scale is tuned to the chromatic scale, but with two courses tuned a fourth apart.
intervals=7 6 5 4 12 11 10 9 3 2 1 0 8 7 6 5 14

The octave key functionality you requested will be available in the next unstable release - I will keep you updated as to when that is available.

Please let me know if this is not what you were looking for.

Excuse me if this is a silly question, but how do you add the new scales? Is there a text file or a directory somewhere containing files for each of the scales? Or is it entered through the EIgenD interface? I've had a look, search and a play, but can't seem to fathom it.

It's explained here:

http://www.eigenlabs.com/faq/eigend/can-you-define-your-own-scales-to-use-with-the-ei/

The text file should already exist at Library/Eigenlabs/Scale Manager/User Scales.txt - you can just add the scales listed above to the bottom of that file, then save it.

You will then have to replace one of the existing scales on the Pico to use the custom scales - one of the video tutorials takes you through tha process (I forget which one - maybe #2 or #3).

stuwyatt, I found that when copy/pasting from the website, the user scales didn't work. Probably due to additional hidden characters and/or formatting. When I typed it in manually, it worked. Thought you might want to know :-)

Thanks gbevin. Yeah, I had a few issues and ended up typing them in by hand. I also had to invert the scales, but I think I've got the hang of it now:

I'm going to adapt some of the major/minor/blues scales to the same kind of format (repeating up the neck), and once they all work, I'll paste them here in case anyone else wants to give them a go. Thanks everyone for your warm welcomes, excellent help and support! I don't think I'm going to be leaving my flat this weekend... :)

I've inverted the two scales above, and have also been creating scales that go up the keyboard in the same way that they would with a stringed instrument.

I'll leave them here if anyone else wishes to give them a go:

[Two courses major]
;This scale is a major scale on two courses
intervals=0 2 4 5 12 14 16 17 7 9 11 12 19 21 23 24 24

[Two course minor harmonic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses
intervals=0 2 3 5 12 14 15 17 7 8 11 12 19 20 23 24 24

[Two course minor melodic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses
intervals=0 2 3 5 12 14 15 17 7 9 11 12 19 21 23 24 24

[2 Oct Two courses major]
;This scale is a major scale on two courses - 2 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 4 5 24 26 28 29 7 9 11 12 31 33 35 36 36

[2 Oct Two course minor harmonic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses - 2 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 3 5 24 26 27 29 7 8 11 12 31 32 35 36 24

[2 Oct Two course minor melodic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses - 2 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 3 5 24 26 27 29 7 9 11 12 31 33 35 36 24

[3 Oct Two courses major]
;This scale is a major scale on two courses - 3 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 4 5 36 38 40 41 7 9 11 12 43 45 47 48 36

[3 Oct Two course minor harmonic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses - 3 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 3 5 36 38 39 41 7 8 11 12 43 44 47 48 24

[3 Oct Two course minor melodic]
;This scale is a minor scale on two courses - 3 octaves apart
intervals=0 2 3 5 36 38 39 41 7 9 11 12 43 45 47 48 24

[Fifths chromatic]
;This scale is tuned to the chromatic scale, but with two courses tuned a fifth apart.
intervals=0 1 2 3 7 8 9 10 4 5 6 7 11 12 13 14 14

[Fourths chromatic]
;This scale is tuned to the chromatic scale, but with two courses tuned a fourth apart.
intervals=14 5 6 7 8 0 1 2 3 9 10 11 12 4 5 6 7

The 2-octave and 3-octave scales are quite fun to use with the piano - as it allows you to hold deep bass notes while you can flutter around with the higher register.

I also sent the following idea to the developers, and I'd be interested to hear what other people think about it:

Pitch shift mode
==========

Activated by pressing both of the octave buttons together.

Buttons 1-12 light up in red, with the default button 12 in green (indicating the buttons currently switch octaves). Pressing any of the buttons 1-12 will mean that the octave keys jump up and down based on those steps.

I was thinking that button 13 could toggle whether the pitch change also changes the bass key or not - or whether it just extends the playing range of the current key (if that makes sense).

Button 16 could be a simple escape button that goes back to whatever mode/instrument you were playing with.
