Software: Collaborative Challenge Eigenharp Project

Most Recent

written by: TheTechnobear

A short journey across the Susitna Glacier, played on an Eigenharp Alpha, all sounds from a Virus TI. Inspired by the beautiful Earth as Art image of Susitna Glacier.

An experiment for me in sound design using the TI, and building up multiple layers within Ableton Live.

Following the recent launch of the NASA "Earth As Art" free ipad app,
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nasa-earth-as-art/id577527077?mt=8
with stunning and beautiful images,
suggesting so much sonic/musical inspiration,
A free ebook version of "Earth as Art" in PDF format may be downloaded by visiting:
http://www.nasa.gov/connect/ebooks/earth_art_detail.html

me and Dragica Kahlina @dkah, think it could be fun and fitting since these images are made with highly technical gear.

We could make this a collaborative Eigenharp project.
Everybody who owns an Eigenharp can take one of the pictures and record a little piece of music and share it on
the SoundCloud group for eigenharp players (thanks again Bruce @cropleyb)
http://soundcloud.com/groups/eigenharp

(with the picture, they are mostly public domain, Dragica checked http://www.usgs.gov/visual-id/credit_usgs.html)
More info:

The images are here also:

Challenge your Eigenharp sonic wise thru images.

Cheers
António Machado

That's a really nice idea and some of the pics are amazing. I'm ludicrously busy at work at the moment, but will try and give it a go as soon as time allows.

Thanks,
Mark.

I need to make a new video, haven't done one for a while, might get some time next week. I had a look at a few of the pictures, and within a few seconds got two different ideas for sounds. Now the challenge is to achieve them with my simplistic knowledge of synth programming.

@MarkPowell
No rush here...

@0beron
Those are truly powerful mind blowing inspirational images. I've chosen one from around half (saving the rest for later)
and I know what you mean "synth programming", takes time and preserverance.
I will just use EigenD and workbench...

Used the Arranger, Recorders and a few plugins.

I think it would be really cool if you guys aggregate the images and the sounds together on one webpage / website. I'm pretty sure it could get quite a bit of interested after talking about it on Synthtopia or CDM.

Starting a monthly post featuring a sound source (hardware, synth or sound module) from my studio and Eigenharp playing, with inspiration on a image of NASA "Earth As Art".

https://soundcloud.com/palaires/01-january-142-vatnajo-kull

01 January - Yamaha VL-1m (all sounds and effects, edited patches) + Eigenharp Double Pico
Two Strip controllers, one breath Pipe, right hand 16 playing keys, 2 octave keys same for the left hand, recorded 4 tracks as VL-1m is monophonic (capable of duophonic) virtual acoustic.

great idea!
here is my humble attempt, quickly put together to get in for january!

Icefall on the Lambert Glacier

This was done on the Alpha, on the lead part I tried to emulate the Theremin by using the 2 strips as volume/pitch, The pico was used as used to control Live 9 (via oscpad), and all sounds designed and produced on my Virus TI. A lot of fun :)

I quite like the idea of using these images for my experiments in sound design and other experimentation, so will try to contribute some more over the coming months.

Awesome @ TheThechnobear, thanks for joining this adventure!
1 image 1000 words
1 sound / note that I'm sure has many stories in the air ;-)
