Workbench: Bank change/program change issue with Audio Unit agent

Most Recent

written by: keyman

From my experience, plug-in creators don't really take bank and program change messages into great consideration.
Not to mention there is no broad agreement on how to do it; the end user is the one that loses the most (in between the ones that develop ways to control those plug-ins)

About Alchemy, what i was trying to say the other day, was I cannot change the libraries, other then Factory... (I have some purchased) so again, problems...

(edit)
I also remember that in some early version of EigenD - the midi agent had Bank and Program - also exposed in STAGE.... not anymore

I put together a proof of concept setup which uses percussion keys to change banks/programs in an audio unit. (Belcanto for this is in the wiki, under Audio Unit).

I tested this with several plugins, i.e.: Alchemy, Diva, Zebra, AAS Chromaphone, AAS String Session.

Alchemy is the only one that accepts the bank change correctly. All accept program change.

The problem is: How is it possible to get to patches that fall outside of the 127 limit? If one wanted to load a patch that is not loaded into the default bank in the other plugins, how would this be accomplished?

I'll also ask on the various support forums for the other plugins and if I find out anything useful, I'll post back.

I received a response back from u-he on how to change banks.

Have not had a chance to try it yet. It appears that we duplicate the program into folders in the MIDI Programs folder and then those become the Banks.

Hi Randy,

yes, I have a suggestion for you: the manuals! ;)

No really, we think that they are well written.
On page 6 you'll find this paragraph on "Midi Programs Folder" where it says...
"Banks: The MIDI Programs folder can contain up to 128 sub-folders (of 128 patches each), and these are switchable via MIDI bank select messages."

Also received a response from Applied-Acoustics:

Hi Randy,

We don't support bank change, and unfortunately there's no alternative.
